What is a Door Sensor?

A door sensor is a vital component of modern security systems and automatic doors. It detects the opening and closing of doors, ensuring increased security and convenience. Door sensors work through a pair of components, usually a reed switch and a magnet. When the door is closed, the circuit is complete. If the door opens, the circuit breaks, triggering an alert or action. You may use a door sensor for vulnerable points, such as a room with sensitive equipment, documents, or anything you need to keep an eye on, which would usually come with a lock or keypad for the initial security measure.

Door sensors can connect to WiFi through a central hub connected to your broadband router, which means the status of your door is reported to your phone when a change occurs, adding an extra layer of protection to the pursuit of smart building automation.

For automatic doors, sensors use technologies such as motion detection, infrared, or pressure sensors. These detect a person or object in close proximity and signal the door to open automatically. Downstairs doorways are the most vulnerable points of a building, and so a door sensor provides peace of mind, and a way to stay immediately updated if they’re tampered with, allowing you to act quickly.

The benefits of door sensors extend beyond security. They enhance accessibility by enabling hands-free operation, improve energy efficiency by ensuring doors remain closed when not needed, and offer convenience in various settings like commercial buildings.

Easy to install, modern door sensors are often wireless and can be integrated into smart home systems, giving users the ability to monitor and control access remotely through apps. The simplicity, coupled with their significant safety and cost-saving benefits, makes door sensors an essential feature for any security-conscious building manager.

At Smart Building Products, we offer a range of door sensors. For example, the IoT door sensor by Eltako wireless sensor uses solar cell and battery with a lifetime of eight years to protect homes and buildings.

Similarly, the simple Milesight LoRaWAN door contact sensor is able to be mounted on any door to detect opening or closing and warn of intrusion.
