Secure Remote Access & VPN Routers

Secure remote access lets engineers reach building services, plant and controllers from anywhere without opening ports on a client's network or relying on a site VPN they do not control. A Lock is installed on site and paired with a Key or Softkey, which creates an encrypted connection between the two automatically. Because the connection is established outbound from the device, there is no need for a fixed IP address, port forwarding or changes to the customer's firewall.

Our TOSIBOX range covers everything from the compact Lock 150 for single panel installations through to the 600 series for larger sites and cellular connectivity where no fixed line is available. Keys and Softkeys are added as required, so access can be issued to individual engineers and revoked just as easily.

FAQ

What does "secure remote access" mean?

Secure remote access means connecting to equipment on a site network from off-site over an encrypted link, without exposing that equipment to the open internet.

The old approach was to give a controller a public IP address and forward a port to it through the customer's firewall, which works but also means anyone scanning the internet can find the device and attempt to log in, which is how a great deal of building plant ends up compromised. Most IT departments will no longer allow it.

Secure remote access inverts the arrangement: a hardware device, usually called a Lock, sits on the site network and makes an outbound encrypted connection to a matching Key held by the engineer. Nothing inbound is required, so no ports are opened and no firewall rules are changed. Access is tied to the physical Key or a licensed Softkey rather than a shared password, so it can be issued per engineer and revoked immediately when someone leaves or a contract ends. In practice, it also gives you an audit trail of who connected and when.

What is the use case for a smart VPN router?
The core use case is maintaining equipment you cannot easily get to. A visit to site to check a controller, download a log or push a firmware update costs a day and a set of travel expenses, and it delays the fix. A VPN router lets the same work happen in minutes from the office. Common applications include:
  • BMS and controls maintenance. Reach BACnet and Modbus controllers, HMIs and PLCs on the site network as though you were plugged into the panel.
  • Multi site estates. Retail chains, schools and healthcare trusts where one team supports plant across dozens of buildings.
  • Service and warranty contracts. Diagnose faults before dispatching an engineer, so they arrive with the right part.
  • Remote and unmanned sites. Pumping stations, plant rooms and district heating substations, often with a cellular model where there is no fixed line.
  • Customer networks you do not control. The outbound connection means you can work on site equipment without asking the client's IT team for firewall changes, which is frequently the thing that stalls a project.
  • Segregating OT from IT. The Lock creates a separate network for the plant, keeping building services traffic off the corporate LAN.

The commercial case is usually straightforward. Most installations pay for themselves in avoided site visits within the first year.
